Taylor’s Crossing High School has a monthly Book Club program, with Kindles provided free of charge to all students. Every month, your child will choose from among five or six books, ranging from classic literature to more modern options. Students are given ample in-class time to read their selections, culminating in a discussion group.
Students are placed in discussion groups with peers who read the same novel, and the proceedings are led by a faculty member with intimate knowledge of the book. All students are encouraged to offer their insights as the group discusses themes, characters, and moments from the book over the course of a two-hour, Socratic-style discussion where everyone’s voice is heard and appreciated.
Book Club seating arrangements are informal and classrooms are made cozy for the monthly event. Occasionally, students will travel off-campus to enjoy a Book Club meeting at a welcoming locale conducive to relaxed discussion. Perhaps most enticing of all, there is no homework or writing assignment associated with the Book Club.
Above all else, the goal of the Taylor’s Crossing Book Club is to broaden our student’s understanding of the world around them through literature, and through mature discussion of challenging themes with their peers and teachers.
